The labels are three different heights, 1/2 inch,3/4 inch and 1 inch. I use various sizes of dowel to make cans/tins. I cut the dowel into different heights and paint each end with silver paint. Buying dowel at the lumber store can be expensive, but if you keep your eyes open you can find it elsewhere. The handle on those little throwaway foam brushes is a good source, also wooden spoons from the dollar store. I rescued an old fold up knitting bag/stand, which was made of 2 sizes of dowel and fabric. If you don't have access to wooden dowel, you can use polymer clay. Roll a worm of the clay into the size you want, bake it and slice with a razor blade while the clay is still warm, into the desired lengths. |
Tinned Food Canning started in jars. The process was invented in France in 1795 by Nicholas Appert, a chef who was determined to win the prize of 12,000 francs offered by Napoleon for a way to prevent military food supplies from spoiling. Appert canned meats and vegetables in jars sealed with pitch and by 1804 opened his first vacuum-packing plant. A number of inventions and improvements followed, and by the 1860's, the time it took to process food in a can had been reduced from six hours to 30 minutes. Canned foods were soon commonplace. Tin-coated steel is used today.
