At Home in 1920

Imagine how daring and ultra modern the short flapper dresses must have seemed in 1920!. I am sure there must have been lots of heated discussions between up- to- date daughters and Edwardian thinking mothers and fathers about what was decent.

Teenage daughters in that decade, who came home with bobbed hair, probably were met with the same reception as teenagers daughters are today, when they come home with a tattoo.

The Great War was over and people were ready for change. Out with the old and in with the new was the attitude of the day.
Home decor was minimized, furniture was sleek and sophisticated.
I am sure that lots of 1920's living rooms must have looked so much improved when those heavy Victorian furnishings, drapes, and of course those overly busy wallpapers were removed.

To give your dollhouse a 1920's look, use lots of mirrors and chrome, think shiny. People were awed by New York skyscrapers; that new architectural style influenced furniture designs to be more smooth and linear. No more over stuffed chairs.
People were able to travel more and souvenirs from far off places were displayed in the home. Tiger skin rugs and leopard skin sofa throws could be found in the homes of the rich.
Even if you are making a 1920's working class type of dollhouse or a rural cottage, a fan from China or ivory elephants from India would have been commonplace.

As well the Arts and Crafts Movement while waning was not dead. Handcrafted furniture was still popular with both rich and poor.
In my childhood home my bedside table was made with small tree branches for legs and something like plywood with braided wicker around the edge for the top and shelf. It had several layers of paint chipping from it. While I wasn't born until the '40's it is quite likely that the table had be around since then. It would be so easy and inexpensive to make a miniature table like this.

Art Deco emerged in Paris in the middle of the decade and immediately became a major trend in everything from architecture to ashtrays.
