While I was searching for historically correct miniature
wallpaper, my interest in this topic grew. I came across a lot of interesting
facts about how, when and why wallpaper evolved, and how the designs
changed over they years.
I have included some of the information on the web pages
in case you too may find it interesting.
Wallpaper began as a cheap substitute for tapestry and
paneling. Some historians believe that the use of wallpaper dates back
to the 1400s.The first wallpapers were decorations for wood panels,
introduced into England by Flemish craftsmen. The papers were small
squares with images printed by wood blocks, which were then colored
in by hand.
A lot of the vintage doll's house and miniature wallpapers
that are on these pages were made from actual photographs. I love restoring
old family photographs and old documents, restoring the wallpaper photographs
is just an extension of that hobby.
Searching for wallpaper from the 1950's-70's took me
forever. Finding pictures of wallpaper from that era was hard, but finding
nostalgia websites about those decades was easy. I spent hours reminiscing.
